Introduction
Erkan Village is located in the border area east of the center of Siyu Town and the clan has kept many traditional features. The arrangement has the advantage of moderating the climate. Under the traditional taboos, most of the houses are no higher than the only temple in the village, Erxing Temple. The most famous construction in Erkan Village is the hall of the Chen clan, which was listed as a grade-three historic site. Apart from being noted for being the biggest in the county, the
stone sculptures, the house is a rare example of a civil house in Penghu because of the wooden sculptures and artworks in it. In Year 78 (1989)of the R.O.C., Erkan Village was chosen as the clan preserve by the government and after the planning in Year 82 of the R.O.C (1993), various repairs commenced and continued till the present. In Year 90 of
the R.O.C. (2001), the Planning Committee of the Ministry of Interior appointed Erkan Village, Siyu Town in Penghu County as the traditional clan preserve, which is the first traditional clan preserve in the country.
The Erkan Clan was selected as one of the top ten historic sights of Penghu County in Penghu County Historic Sights Poll in Year 90 of the R.O.C. (2001). It was also selected as one of the top one hundred historic sights in Taiwan, coming in at 99.
