Introduction
Scholar Zhao Erdai, whose original name was Tonghe, was born in Zhenjiang City in Jiangsu Province in 1916. He had been interested in painting since he was young. After several years of life as an official, he decided to retire and live in the mountains to concentrate on artistic creation. He made great achievements in painting, calligraphy, drawing, western painting, seal cutting, sculpture, pottery, print, photography and poetry among which his paintings and pottery are especially praised.
His works have the individual style of Zen, simple, quiet, solitary and passive.
Erdai, who used to live on Xindian Mountain, had a sudden idea to build an art hall in Penghu and spend his rest of his life there. Therefore, with the support of the government of Penghu county, the construction of Erdai Art Hall was started on March 25, Year 77 of the R.O.C. (1988) and the hall was formally opened on September 28, Year 79 of theR.O.C. (1990). A rich collection of Erdai¡¦s works is held in the hall and the hall has been a great honor to Penghu County.
