Ocean, Islands, and Wind: A Report Series of Penghu’s Public Arts – Baptism of the Ocean’s Wisdom
Upon entering the campus of National Penghu University of Science and Technology (NPU), visitors are immediately greeted by a commanding public art installation called Baptism. Composed of two massive stone structures facing each other, the sculpture resembles a slowly opening gate that welcomes every student who steps into the campus with a profound sense of presence. As a visual landmark and a symbol of hospitality, it is more than just a sculpture— it represents the beginning of a journey, symbolizing the students crossing a threshold, embarking on a new stage of life where they receive intellectual and spiritual enlightenment.
Baptism was created in 2007 by the renowned Taiwanese sculptor Tung-min Hu (1967-). At that time, public art in Taiwan was flourishing, emphasizing the application of
diverse materials and the expression of local cultures. This work features two towering stone volumes as its primary structure, and embedded semi-translucent green glass in the center.
This concise yet layered design demonstrated the pioneering spirit of mixed media art approaches of contemporary public art.
Hu excels at in transforming the elements of space into artwork and resonating them with the general public. He often presents metaphors through abstract forms and combines distinct materials to create unique visual tension. In Baptism, the rough, resolute granite symbolizes the foundation of the earth and the essence of everything. By contrast, the flowing water patterns carved into the central green glass echo the ocean's power of purification, transformation, and rebirth. The dialogue between the two media creates a visual rhythm that balances rigidity with fluidity. When sunlight penetrates the glass, the refracted light and shadow evoke a deep, resplendent gateway to the ocean, guiding students toward wisdom and growth.
The title, Baptism, stems from the romantic spirit of oceanic culture. It echoed the fundamental ideas of NPU: Ocean Culture, Creative Technology, and Humanistic Care. Situated on an island, this public art at campus entrance symbolizes NPU’s vision: As students pass this symbolic gate, they shall be tempered by the tides, enabling them to develop and create in this academic journey. Overall, Baptism is more than a public art installation— it has become the spiritual emblem of the university, representing the faith in inheriting ocean culture, embracing a creative vision, and all possibilities of the future.
